The Teaching Gardens project at Stadium Reserve Papatoetoe began in 2009 and continues today. Several community groups and/or individuals are allotted plots and provided lessons on gardening & growing vegetables. The groups share and exchange their knowledge and experience from their various home countries in the gardens and work with mentors. Interest in the project has grown so much that there are now groups on a waiting list for an allotment. One of the aims of this project was to enable participants to use the gardening experience and skills to grow vegetables in their own back yards. Hope n Help Charitable Trust, also known for their Adopt a Garden Scheme, was a key player making this happen in Papatoetoe. On 8 September 2012, as part of the Papatoetoe 150th celebrations, locals took part in the Hope n Help Charitable Trust Vege Garden Trail visiting backyard vege gardens.
