In 1901 the Stonex family, Bainey (Bernard the father) and his sons Fred and Joe, formed a dairy company. In 1912 they bought 23 and a half acres of land, part of which is now occupied by the Papatoetoe Intermediate School. Initially using horse-drawn wagons for collecting the milk, later they got a truck to take it to the processing factory in Edinburgh Street, Newton. Although the first block of land had been sold in 1924 the Stonex brothers bought it back in 1932. The property was sold again in 1940 and part of the Kimpton Road property was taken in the early 1950s for construction of the motorway. The land on both sides of the motorway was eventually used for housing. In 1946 the Stonex factory was sold to the Auckland Milk Company Ltd. When the motorway construction split up their Papatoetoe property in 1954, the Stonex Brothers decided to cease town milk production but their corporate involvement in the town milk industry continued until November 1971, a total of 65 years in the industry. Bernard Road, off Stonex Road is named after Bainey.
